Happy Flower Garden QAL – Week 3 – Flying Geese

IMG_6078 (3)

Welcome to Week 3 of our Happy Flower Garden Quilt Along! (Download Pattern) This week we will be making our Flying Geese.

I love using Flying Geese. You can make so many different designs using them. The benefit to using a Flying Geese instead of sewing 2 half square triangles together, is that you don’t have a seam down the middle of your pretty fabric! Less seams equals less sewing! Yay! Each time you make them they get easier and easier.

The Happy Flower Garden Pattern uses the 4 at 1 time no waste method and the 1 at a time method for construction.  You can also download an additional PDF with your pattern that gives you the pieces you need to cut if you decide to make all your flying geese using the 1 at a time method or if you want to use half square triangles instead.

If you have never made the flying geese using the 4 at 1 time method or the 1 at a time method, you may want to try it out first on some scrap fabrics.

Tips for flying geese:
* Go slow when sewing for accurate seams.
* Make sure to read ALL the instructions and look at the diagrams closely
* Finger press your seams open before using your iron.
* Press seams without steam if possible (Dry iron)
* When Pressing, press down with out motion. Moving your iron around a lot can distort your flying geese

I will be filming a LIVE Video Tuesday May 15 th at 10:15 am PDT (West Coast USA) in the Facebook Group! I will be going over how to make your flying geese units and answering any questions you have. The video will be saved for later viewing.

Happy Flower Garden QAL – Week 2 – Half Square Triangles

IMG_6063 (3)

Welcome to Week 2 of our Happy Flower Garden Quilt Along!! This week we will be making ALL of our half square triangles.

When I make a quilt, I like to make all of the pieces need for all the blocks in the beginning. Then when it comes to making the blocks, they go together super quickly.

I like to make my Half Square Triangles with the 2 at 1 time method. If you have a different method you prefer, go for it! I like this method because all your finished edges will be straight grain and not on the bias.

To make the HST 2 at a time, I add 1 1/4 inch to the finished size HST.
I like to give you plenty of wiggle room for when you are trimming your HST down to the correct size.

IMG_6064 (2)

TOOLS:
Marking tool – I like to either use a disappearing ink pen made for fabric. Or a Hera Marker. A Hera Marker makes an indent in the fabric. You don’t have to worry about it washing out and it stays in the fabric for a while.
Ruler – Any ruler will do. You will need this to mark out straight lines

You can find the size square you need to cut in your pattern (Download here)

IMPORTANT – You will need to then trim down all of your half square triangles to the correct size. You will want to make sure to line your center seam up with the 45 degree angle on your ruler to insure that your points line up when sewing.

I will be filming a LIVE Video Tuesday May 8th at 10:15 am PDT (West Coast USA) in the Facebook Group! I will be going over how to make your half square triangle and answering any questions you have. The video will be saved for later viewing.

Happy Flower Garden Quilt Along – Week 1 – Cutting our Fabric

IMG_6041 (2)

Yay! It’s the first week of the Happy Flower Garden Quilt along. It’s finally feeling like Spring here in Western Washington. The sun is shining and my flowers are starting to bloom.

Download Pattern

This week of the quilt along we will be cutting all our fabric. I like to cut all my fabric before I start a quilt. This make the piecing go together quickly.

I don’t pre-wash my fabric…I know that’s a No-No… But since I stopped pre-washing, I’ve loved being able to dive right into a project. The fabric is still crisp, when you wash the no longer stiff. Also when you wash your fabric it will shrink and  some times it will fray and you will loose some yardage. It also gives your finished quilt a nice crinkled look when it’s washed and dried. I like to throw a couple Shout Color Catchers in the wash when washing my finished quilt. This helps catch any loose dyes.

If you like to pre-wash your fabric, make sure to purchase a little extra to account for shrinkage!

Also, if you are using one of the alternative Flying Geese methods provided in the supplemental pdf. You will want to make sure to have a little extra fabric just in case.

Here is a Fabric Selection PDF you can print out. Cut your fabrics and tape/glue them to it!

Happy Flower Garden Quilt Fabric Selections

Cutting Your Fabric Tips:

*Get a NEW Rotary Blade (a dull blade makes it twice as hard to cut)
*Measure Twice and Cut Once
*Cut your largest pieces first, then cut the smaller pieces out
*Do NOT round up. Precise cutting is needed to make the 4 at 1 time no waste flying geese. So make sure to cut at the 3/8 or 7/8 marks (depending on what size you are making).

**If you may want to wait to cut your corner stones (Color E) and sashing strips until Week 9, but you can cut them now too! 🙂

I will be filming a LIVE Video Tuesday May 1st at 10:15 am PDT (West Coast USA) in the Facebook Group! I will be going over cutting your fabric and talk a little about the following weeks.

Aloha Ripple QAL – Week 4: Center Block

IMG_5410

Welcome to the 4th week of our Aloha Ripple Quilt Along! I hope you are having a lot of fun sewing along. Now that all of our components are done, it’s time to start making our blocks!! This is my favorite part of quilting. Putting all the pieces together like a puzzle.

This week we will be making the center block of our quilt. The center block is a square in square quilt block. This block goes together super quickly so you will have plenty of time to finish up trimming the half square triangles from last week. This will also give all of you that just joined time to catch up!

Making the Center Block

Please refer to the pattern to find your exact piece sizes. I like to use the stitch and flip method for this block. When making the block this way you don’t have to worry about using triangles cut on the bias.

First you will lay two small squares on top of your large square on opposite corners (with right sides of fabric facing each other).
Mark a line diagonal from one corner to the other on each small square. Stitch right next to the drawn line toward the outer side. Trim off your corner, leaving a 1/4 inch from the seam. Press toward the attached triangles.

Next you will place the other two small squares on the opposite corners. Mark a line diagonal from one corner to the other on each square. Stitch right next to the drawn line. Trim off your corner, leaving a 1/4 inch from the seam. Press toward the attached triangles.

This block is a great way to frame a pretty floral or to fussy cut a cute image. I can’t wait to see all of your blocks!!

Aloha Ripple QAL – Week 2: Flying Geese

IMG_5389 (2)

Week 2 of the Aloha Ripple Quilt Along! (Download Pattern)

Now that we have all our pieces cut, it’s time to start making our units! This week we will be making Flying Geese units.

When I started out quilting, I was very nervous about make the Flying Geese unit, so I would opt to use two half square triangles and sew them together instead.
The benefit to using a Flying Geese, is that you don’t have a seam down the middle of your pretty fabric! Less seams equals less sewing! Each time you make them they get easier and easier.

For the Aloha Ripple Quilt we will be using both the 4 at 1 time No Waste Method and the 1 at a time method. See pattern for full directions.

Tips for flying geese:
Go slow when sewing for accurate seams.
Finger press your seams open before using your iron.
Press seams without steam if possible (Dry iron)

Flying Geese – 4 at 1 time No Waste Method

When you are making the Flying Geese with the 4 at 1 time no waste method, you will need 1 large Square and 4 little squares.

Large Square = the width of your finished geese + 1 1/4 inch
Small Squares = the height of your finished geese + 7/8 inch

So for example in this pattern the throw size quilt will have a Finished size geese that is 5 x 10 inches (unfinished 5 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches)
So we will need:
1 Large Square: 10 + 1 1/4 = 11 1/4 inch
4 Small Squares: 5 + 7/8 = 5 7/8 inch

Take your large square and 2 small squares.
With right sides of fabric facing each other, l
ay the two small squares on opposite corners.
Draw a line from one corner to the other diagonally. Pin in place.
Sew a scant 1/4 inch from the drawn line on both sides. A scant 1/4 inch seam is a 1/4 inch that includes the width of your needle/thread. Some 1/4 inch feet will give you this.
Cut down the center line. Press seam to the attached triangles.

Lay 1 small square down on the corner, right sides of fabric facing each other.
Draw a line from one corner to the other diagonally.
Sew a scant 1/4 inch from your drawn line. Cut down the center and press toward the small triangles. I find these flying geese to be pretty accurate and only need a tiny bit of trimming.

Flying Geese – 1 at a Time Method

Take your (5 1/2 x 10 1/2 inch for throw) rectangle, lay 1 (5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inch) square on top with right sides of fabric together.

Draw a diagonal line from one corner to the other. Stitch one thread width to the outside of the drawn line. You will want to butt your needle up to the outside of your drawn line when you are sewing (see the red line in the diagram). Cut 1/4 inch from your sewn line as shown below. Press toward the attached triangle.
You will attach the second small square to the other side with the same method. Press to the attached triangle. Trim if needed.

oneflyinggeese

I hope you get the hang of making these flying geese units! They are a lot of fun to make and the design possibilities are endless!

Aloha Ripple Quilt Along

IMG_5047 (2)

Welcome to the Aloha Ripple Quilt Along!!

I’ve noticed most quilt alongs quilts consist of either sampler blocks or a bunch of the block. So I thought it would be fun to do something different! The Aloha Ripple quilt has a modern over all design, but it is still made with distinct blocks. The blocks are made up of squares, half square triangle and flying geese blocks. Each week we will have a new step of quilt. I will be posting a new blog post each week to go over that weeks step. I will also be filming a live video each week to go over the step and answer any questions in the Facebook Group.

This quilt is perfect for the adventurous beginner to intermediate quilter. It would look great in a variety of fabrics. I would recommend picking a contrasting fabric for the background, so the design pops. The pattern comes with directions for a Baby, Throw and Queen size quilt, so you can decide which size is perfect for you.

My original Aloha Ripple Quilt was made for my parents-in-law for their anniversary. I thought they would like a bright and cheerful quilt. They both love visiting Hawaii and the quilt was made with Kona Cotton. So I decided to name the quilt Aloha Ripple!
I quilted the quilt in a straight line fashion mimicking the design. I bound it in a fun black and white dot fabric and backed it with the beautiful purple I used on the front.

Fabrics use in mine: Red, Orange, Canary, Grasshopper, Bahama Blue, Royal, Magenta and Pimatex Basics Pin Dot all by Robert Kaufman

My second Aloha Ripple quilt was a baby size quilt! I wanted to use up some of my stash so I found a bunch of solids that went great together!

If you couldn’t tell, I love Kona Cottons! These are: Grape mist, Aloe, Purrisan, Gumdrop, Ultra Marine, Noble Purple and Medium Grey

I found this awesome fabric from the Black and White Collection by Jennifer Sampou for Robert Kaufman Fabrics. I didn’t have enough of one fabric for the binding, so I decided to use them all!

I’m looking forward to seeing all of your fabric choices and the beautiful quilts you make!

Block 6 – Stepping Stone Block (Happy Cloud Quilted Pot Holder Quilt Along)

IMG_5275 (2)

Wow! We are already at our last block of our Pot Holder Quilt along!! I love block 6 the Stepping Stone block. This block goes together quickly and is super cute!

When making this block I like to lay out all my pieces to see how the block will be when finished. Then go from there! Make sure to press your seams in an alternating direction so you can nest your seams (so the seams interlock) when sewing it together.

I can’t wait to see all of your creations with these past 6 blocks! Thank you everyone for joining in the fun and making these blocks with me!

If you like this block, you may like my Stepping Stone Baby Quilt pattern! I made 4 of this baby quilt and plan on connecting them with a extra strip of fabric between to make an almost queen size quilt (87 1/2 x 87 1/2 inches). This will be a family cuddle quilt for our couch! My son’s name is Cloud and daughter’s name is Snow, so I found some cute cloud print and snowflake print fabrics. I’m hoping to finish this one up soon!

Block 3 – Sawtooth Star Block (Happy Cloud Quilted Pot Holder Quilt Along)

IMG_5065 (2)

Welcome to Block 3 of our Happy Cloud Quilted Pot holder Quilt along! The Sawtooth Star block is one of my favorites! I love using it in quilts, table runners and placemats and of course in pot holders!

I love how you an showcase a pretty fabric in the center like the block above. I used fabric from the Aviary 2 collection designed by Joel Dewberry for Free Spirit Fabrics.
You could have your center fabric match your outer fabric, like these pot holders I finished below.
I made these using fabric from the Fresh Market collection by Riley Blake Designs. I bound them using a stripe fabric made by Robert Kaufman Fabrics.

IMG_5115 (2)

With the above pot holders I wanted to quilt them to emphasize the star pattern! I quilted them using my walking foot and lined the foot up against the start edge. It’s nice using a walking foot, because it helps pull all of those layers through the machine. If your machine didn’t come with a walking foot it is easy to find one for your machine. You can google your make and model number or go to your manufactures website!

If you have already downloaded the Quilt-A-Long pattern, the block will now be available in your Craftsy account for download.

Snowy Day Quilt Sampler Block Challenge

SDQS - QuiltCLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD: Snowy Day Quilt Sampler Pattern

Recently my Snowy Day Quilt Sampler was used in the National Quilters Circle Block Challenge! Over 24,000 signed up for the challenge and over 17,000 joined the Facebook Group.

It was a lot of fun meeting and interacting with all of these wonderful quilters. Seeing all of the Beautiful fabric and color combinations, makes me want to make more and more quilts.

The National Quilters Circle did a great job getting all these wonderful quilters together to make this quilt. I am so happy I had the opportunity to be part of it. You can see the Block Challenge recap by clicking here. I list a few of my favorite quilts from the challenge! There were so many beautiful quilts to choose from!

SDQS 6

I chose to go with straight ‘organic’ line quilting! It’s quick, easy and I love the texture it give the quilt!

When you use cotton batting your quilt will shrink 3% when you wash and dry it. It will get all nice and crinkled and it has a wonderful texture.

I used Macramé fabric by Rashida Coleman-Hale of  Cotton+Steel in the quilt I made for the pattern!  I love this fabric so much, I am also using it in my NEW Happy Flower Garden Quilt. The pattern will be coming out June 1, 2017! Yay! Stay tuned for photos!

During the block challenge I made two quilt tops with the group! My first quilt top was made with a mixture of Up Parasol and Clementine fabric by Heather Bailey for Free Spirit Fabrics.

2ndquilt

I loved how the blocks turned out! But there seemed to be a lot of pink. So I decided to add a pink border around each block. Then I added a scrappy teal/aqua sashing in between all of the blocks. I gifted this quilt to my parents for their 41st Anniversary!

The second quilt I made during the challenge was made with a variety of Cotton +Steel fabrics. I love how they all go so well together, even though they are from different designers.

Sprinkle by Sarah Watts, Cookie Book by Kim Kight and Paper Bandana by Alexia Marcelle Abeg

1stquilt

I tried to make this a little different than my other two quilts. I did a border in white around each of the blocks and then I did a navy Paper Bandana sashing with the Red Sprinkle cornerstones. I’m excited to finish this one. I bought some Kona Cotton in Baby pink for the backing fabric.

Happy Cloud Quilted Pot Holder Quilt Along

Quilted Pot Holders

This post may contain Affiliate Links. When using the link, you pay the same amount for the items, I just receive a small commission.

If you like to sew or quilt, I know you have lots of fabric scraps! I know I sure do! So I thought it would be fun to run a Free Quilted Pot Holder Block Quilt-a-long with you all! Yay! You can download the Full length pattern here:

DOWNLOAD HERE: Happy Cloud Quilted Pot Holders Pattern

Each block is a basic design that would look great as a pot holder. If you are not interested in making pot holders, you can still join in! You can use your 8 1/2 inch unfinished blocks in a quilt. You could make a couple throw pillows. Or whatever your heart desires.

The first week you will receive the fabric requirements if you would like to complete all of your pot holders with the same fabric. Each 8 1/2 inch unfinished block requires a small amount of fabric, this would be a great way to use up some scrap. You will also receive directions how to assemble your pot holders (binding method and a non binding method). So by the end of the quilt-a-long you will have 6 pot holders (or 6 sets if you do two pot holders a week). These are a great way to freshen up your kitchen. They also make great gifts!

When picking out your fabrics and thread, make sure to only use 100% Cotton!! If you use polyester it will melt if it catches fire. If you use Cotton it will just smolder.

The Fabric requirements are for ONE of each block (6 pot holder total). If you would like to make sets (2 of each block) DOUBLE the fabric amounts.

You can also join my Happy Cloud Quilted Pot Holder Quilt-a-long Group on Facebook to share all of your fabric choices, progress and  pretty finished blocks and what you decided to make them into!
