This pattern would be considered good for an intermediate quilter. It has a lot of blocks and pieces to make and keep organized.

Week 3 – Make Large Arrow units, Diamond in Square and Diamond in Rectangle units.

This week we will be making some more units. These units are used in several of the blocks, so I like to make them ahead of time, so the blocks will go together super quick when we start to make them.

These units will all use the ‘Stitch and Flip’ method that is used in a 1 at a time Flying Geese block.

Once you’ve finished make sure to snap a photo and share in the Facebook Quilt Along group or on Instagram with the hashtag #InfiniteNightHelixQAL

I’m so excited to see your quilt come together! There are a few quilters in the Facebook quilt along that decided to work ahead and are almost finished with their quilts. They are looking SO beautiful!!

JOIN ME! I will be filming a LIVE video in the Facebook Quilt Along group tomorrow (Wednesday Sept. 28th) at 11 am PDT to go over how to make the Large Arrow units, Diamond in Square and Diamond in Rectangle units. I will also answer any questions you have. If you can’t watch it live, it will be saved to the group and be uploaded to my YouTube channel and will be placed in this blog post.

Week 1 – Infinite Night Helix QAL – Cut Pieces

Printed Paper Pattern
Digital Download (USA)
Digital Download (Outside USA customers)
Today is the last day to save 15% OFF on the pattern, starting tomorrow the pattern will be 10% OFF thru the end of the Quilt along on November 15th (end of the quilt along).

This pattern would be considered good for an intermediate quilter. It has a lot of blocks and pieces to make and keep organized.

WEEK 1 – Cut Pieces

This week will be cutting our fabric for the quilt. Typically, I prefer to cut out the whole quilt first, so you don’t have to worry about doing it later. With this quilt, I chose to wait to cut the Color D ‘Pieces around blocks’ and the ‘Top, Bottom and Side borders’ until all my blocks are completed. Since I won’t be using them for a very long time.

You will want to wait to cut the Color D ‘Pieces around blocks’ and the ‘Top, Bottom and Side borders’ especially if your blocks don’t always end up the correct size. Then you can adjust these pieces to be the same size as your blocks.

If you make sure all your units are measuring the correct size throughout making the quilt, your blocks should end up the correct size. And you don’t have to worry about waiting to cut those pieces.

If you are making a scrappy version, you may want to cut out 1 block at a time.

I wrote the pattern using the 4 at a time flying geese method. Then I decided to add a ‘supplemental’ that includes two alternative ways to make your flying geese, in case you hate the 4 at a time method. These methods are on the very last page of the pattern. You can substitute the 4 at a time pieces (indicated with a FG in the cutting instructions) with the pieces listed on the supplemental.

Tips for cutting your fabric:
*Make sure to press all of your fabric before cutting. This will help ensure all of your pieces are cut correctly. You don’t want to accidently have a wrinkle in a piece.
*Cut out your larger pieces first, then cut out the smaller ones. This helps you conserve your fabric.
*Cut all of your fabric with the same brand of rulers. If you are using multiple rulers, they can vary from brand to brand and may not be the same. So, I like to stick to one brand.

Finish Those UFQs!!

IMG_7792 (2)

This post may contain Affiliate Links. When using the link, you pay the same amount for the items, I just receive a small commission.

Most quilters love cutting into new projects, so they end up with a big pile of UFQ’s! Most people refer to them as UFO (Unfinished Objects), but I’m trying to focus on my UFQ’s, Unfinished Quilts!  I have a bigger pile than I would like. Some people have 2 unfinished quilts and some people have 50 unfinished quilts!

So, I’ve decided this November and December I’m going to try to make my pile smaller! I’ve created a PDF where you can list 15 of your Unfinished Quilts, check off which stages you have completed. If you have more than 15 UFQ’s, print off as many sheets as you need.

DOWNLOAD The FREE Project tracker:Finish Those UFOs

I’m hoping this will keep me more organized and help me visualize what I can finish before the end of this year. It would be awesome to start 2020 with no UFQ’s, but I don’t think that is physically possible. I have 6 unfinished quilts and 2 New ones I know I work on before the end of the year. So I’m hoping to finish at least 3 of the UFQ’s and work on my 2 new ones!

To accomplish my goal, I plan to spend at least 1 hour each week on my UFQ’s. This way I can still work on new projects, but I’m still chipping away at those unfinished beauties!

You can choose to work 10 minutes a day, 1 hour a week, 5 hours a week. It’s up to you!!

JOIN ME!! From November 1st to December 31st

  • Printed out the PDF
  • Write your time goal
  • Getting working on those UFQ’s!

Each Friday I will put a post in my Quilt Along Group where you can post a photo or let me know what you worked on the previous week and what you hope to work on the following week!

I’m hoping we can motivate each other to get some of our UFQ’s finished so they can be snuggled and loved!

Flying Geese Cloudy Day Quilt Sampler

This quilt is heavy on the 4 at 1 time no waste flying geese. If you prefer making your flying geese using the 1 at a time method or using 2 half square triangles to make your geese, I would suggest purchasing a little extra fabric. (I will provide a PDF that tells you what pieces you will need to cut to make the Flying Geese with the 1 at a time method or the half square triangle method).

You can use a jelly roll for Color A, all other colors have larger than 2 1/2 inch pieces.

Our Quilt Along Schedule is at the bottom of this blog post.

This quilt would be great using the 4 main colors, or going totally scrappy! I’m so excited to see what fabrics you pic!

Bloomtastic Quilt!

PAPER PATTERN

My favorite part of Spring and Summer time is when all the flowers start to bloom! Since we can’t have blooming flower’s year round, it’s fun to make a quilt with flower blooms!

I had a stack of this Cotton and Steel fabric, I had been trying to decide what quilt pattern to make with it. So that’s when you draw up a new pattern. It’s my go to color combo: Navy, Pink, Purple and Teal.

Bloomtastic Fabric

A lot of my pattern’s are an overall design, so I wanted to try to create something with a repetitive design or repetitive block. That is where the Bloomtastic quilt was born.

It’s made up of a bunch of Flying Geese, Squares, Rectangles and a few half square triangles. My pattern uses the 4 at 1 time Flying Geese method. It’s my favorite method, you can make a lot of Flying Geese so quickly.

IMG_6049 (2)

Once all the Flying geese and Half square triangles are made, the quilt goes together pretty quickly. I decided quilt my original quilt with straight lines from top to bottom, about 1 inch apart. This is a quick and easy way to quilt, and it give the quilt great texture.

IMG_6104 (2)

I love how this quilt turned out so much! I decided to gift this one to my sister.

You can find this pattern in my SHOP!

After finding this gorgeous Laural Canyon Floral fabric, I had to make a baby size Bloomtastic quilt.

IMG_6260 (2)

The top is made with Penned Pal dots by Robert Kaufman for the background fabric and the blooms are made using Kona Cotton in Bright Pink, Bahama Blue, Lagoon and Bubble Gum and Canary yellow.

Happy Flower Garden Quilt Along – Week 9 – Add Sashing and Cornerstones

IMG_6211

Welcome to Week 9 of the Happy Flower Garden Quilt Along! This week we will be finishing our quilt tops! Yay!

If you are sticking to the pattern, we will be adding sashing and corner stones in between all of our blocks. You could go with sashing the same color as your background fabric, or something totally different!! It all depends on how you want your quilt to look.

I like using cornerstones, it helps you line up your blocks and gives your quilt another design element.

With my original Happy Flower Garden quilt I used the background fabric for my sashing.

IMG_4344 (3)

The second Happy Flower Garden Quilt I made, I used a beautiful floral for my sashing!

happyflowergarden2

You could leave out the cornerstones and make long sashing strips. I’m excited to see what you all chose to do!!

I will be filming a LIVE Video Today, Tuesday June 26th at 10:15 am PDT (West Coast USA) in the Facebook Group! I will be going over how to put you quilt top together and answering any questions you have. The video will be saved for later viewing.

Happy Flower Garden QAL – Week 2 – Half Square Triangles

IMG_6063 (3)

Welcome to Week 2 of our Happy Flower Garden Quilt Along!! This week we will be making ALL of our half square triangles.

When I make a quilt, I like to make all of the pieces need for all the blocks in the beginning. Then when it comes to making the blocks, they go together super quickly.

I like to make my Half Square Triangles with the 2 at 1 time method. If you have a different method you prefer, go for it! I like this method because all your finished edges will be straight grain and not on the bias.

To make the HST 2 at a time, I add 1 1/4 inch to the finished size HST.
I like to give you plenty of wiggle room for when you are trimming your HST down to the correct size.

IMG_6064 (2)

TOOLS:
Marking tool – I like to either use a disappearing ink pen made for fabric. Or a Hera Marker. A Hera Marker makes an indent in the fabric. You don’t have to worry about it washing out and it stays in the fabric for a while.
Ruler – Any ruler will do. You will need this to mark out straight lines

You can find the size square you need to cut in your pattern (Download here)

IMPORTANT – You will need to then trim down all of your half square triangles to the correct size. You will want to make sure to line your center seam up with the 45 degree angle on your ruler to insure that your points line up when sewing.

I will be filming a LIVE Video Tuesday May 8th at 10:15 am PDT (West Coast USA) in the Facebook Group! I will be going over how to make your half square triangle and answering any questions you have. The video will be saved for later viewing.

Sapphire Lane Quilt

PAPER PATTERN (USA)

When I was designing this pattern, I was trying to create a Large block, when repeated would create an additional pattern. I also didn’t want it to have a lot of half square triangles or flying geese. I also wanted to use this stack of gorgeous Indah Batiks by Me + You Fabrics.

indah batiks

I decided to go with strip piecing, to make the blocks go together super quick. The pattern also includes the amount of squares needed if you decided not to go with strip piecing or make a scrappy version.

IMG_5778 (2)

These are 21 inch finished blocks, so you only need 4 blocks for the baby size!

IMG_5795 (2)

I wanted to keep the quilting simple on this one. So I marked out a line 1/2 inch from each seam (top to bottom). Then I quilted down the center, making all my quilting lines about 1 inch apart. I love quilting this close together, it gives the quilt great texture when washed and dried.

IMG_5883 (2)
I went with the dark teal as the binding to tie in the center squares. I like to sew my binding to the front of the quilt and then hand sew it to the back.

The weather is finally cooperating here in Washington, so I was able to get a full quilt photo today. The only issue I had was the wind kept wanting to blow my quilt and holder over!
