Week 3 – Orchard in Bloom Quilt Along – Make Corner Units

It’s week 3 of the Orchard in Bloom Quilt Along! This week we will be making all of the corner units for our blocks.

Since I’m making the scrappy using Fat Quarter version, I’ve decided which 2 main colors I’d like to go to get for the corner units. After I make these, I’ll decide what other fabric’s I want to mix in or, I may just keep my block 2 main colors with the background fabric.

Here are my fabrics cut and ready to start piecing!

Orchard In Bloom Quilt Pattern and Quilt Along!

Last September we bought a house that has an orchard! We have 65 fruit/nut trees altogether. The previous owners planted so many different varieties of flowers around the yard too. I love being surprised with new flowers blooming. The many colors of spring flower in our yard ‘The Orchard’ inspired me to make this scrappy, colorful flower quilt!

This pattern is a 16-inch block quilt. So, if you want a larger quilt, you just make more blocks.

The pattern comes with directions for a Baby, Lap, Throw, Full, Queen and King size quilt.

Construction options:
4 main colors with a background fabric
Fat quarters/1/4 yard cuts (the pattern has cutting suggestion diagrams)
Or Super duper scrappy, you can make every block with different fabrics.

I pulled fabrics from my bins, I only had to buy the background fabric for my pattern cover quilt, which is Riley Blake Designs – Le Creme Swiss Dot in Aqua from Stash Fabrics.
When I buy Kona cottons I like to buy a little extra each time. So, I found all of these in my fabric bins. A-D: All Kona Cottons – Prussian, Cadet, Pool, Robin’s Egg, Sangria, Sassy Pink, Med Pink, Mulberry, and Grapemist.
I also had the backing fabric, which is this beautiful Moda by Gingiber – Dwell in Possibility – Full Bloom

Blooming Backyard Quilt

When I first designed this quilt, I was going to make it in a 2 fabric combo. It was during the winter time and I was trying to design something that reminded me of a Faire Isle Sweater. But with having the kids still doing school at home I didn’t get around to making it.

So, when spring was around the corner, I thought what would it look like with lots of color. So, with this pattern you will have the option to make it in 2 colors, with Main colors (like my cover quilt above) or Super scrappy! The pattern comes with blank coloring pages for each size, to make it easier to decide!

Since this pattern, has multiple sizes, but the blocks are not all the same size, each size has a different recommended layout. Since the blocks are made and then sewn into rows, you can rearrange the rows to how you like them best.

Here are the different size layout recommendations!

This pattern is great for the adventurous beginner to intermediate quilter. This pattern comes with directions to either make the flying geese with either:
The 1 at 1 time method – this may be an easier method if you are new to flying geese.
Or the 4 at time method, made slightly larger and trimmed to size – these are a little tricker to make, but once you get the hang of it, you can make your flying geese super fast!

Do you hate Flying Geese?

If you absolutely hate flying geese, I’d recommend replacing your flying geese with 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch rectangles.

Use the 4 at 1 time flying geese cutting instructions, but do NOT cut the Color D (Lime) that is in the cutting chart or the Color F (White) pieces that have a (FG) next to it.
Instead, go to the bottom of page 6 to see how many flying geese your size quilt needs. Replace the amount of flying geese needed with 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch rectangles, cut half of this amount from Color D and cut half of the amount from Color F.
If you are making it scrappy, cut total amount needed from all the colors you are using.

My Blooming Backyard Quilt

For my quilt I chose to use the main colors option.

For the Main colors I used all Kona Cotton solids: A: Valentine, B: Duckling, C: Magenta, D: Kiwi, E: Surf, F: White, G: Jamaica, H: Jamaica and I: Valentine.
Background: Hot Pink Le Creme Swiss Dot by Riley Blake Designs. I found mine at Stash Fabrics (not sponsored)
Binding: Wild at Heart Plaid by Lori Whitlock for Riley Blake Designs. I found mine at Stash Fabrics (not sponsored)
Backing: The Squeeze Sunflowers by @made_everyday for Figo Fabrics. I found mine at Beyond The Bolt (not sponsored)

For quilting, I did a simple top to bottom ‘organic’ straight line from the top to the bottom about 2 inches apart. I like to use my walking foot and the seams as my guide.

I probably should have cut my binding on the bias, but I chose not to. I still love how it turned out!

Flower Party Quilt Pattern

It’s Flower Party time!! Who doesn’t love flowers! What’s even better is flowers that stay pretty year round. If you didn’t know, I love flower quilt blocks.

I have been really into scrappy quilts lately. So I wanted to make a flower quilt that block that would look great scrappy. And I think this Flower Party Quilt is perfect for all those scraps you have in your stash!

I was scrolling through one of my favorite online fabric stores and saw these gorgeous Road Trip fabrics designed by Alison Glass. And I thought these would be perfect for my Flower Party Quilt. I wasn’t sure what to use as a background fabric and one of my lovely followers suggested a gold/yellow color to match. So I took out my trusty Kona Color Card and found Wasabi was a perfect match!

I really wanted the Wasabi to be the center of the flowers as well as the background. So I used the Fabric A amount in the ‘Using 4 main colors’ and I added this to the background fabric amount. You need very little Fabric A so I still used 6 – 2/3 yard cuts for the throw size.

I love how well the bright Wasabi Kona Cotton looked with these Road Trip fabrics.

Quilting
I went with a 1 inch apart line from the top to the bottom of the quilt. I love the texture this gives a quilt and it’s super quick and easy.

flower party binding I picked a beautiful pink floral from the Road Trip fabric line for my binding fabric. I love how it looks!

Bloomtastic Quilt!

My favorite part of Spring and Summer time is when all the flowers start to bloom! Since we can’t have blooming flower’s year round, it’s fun to make a quilt with flower blooms!

I had a stack of this Cotton and Steel fabric, I had been trying to decide what quilt pattern to make with it. So that’s when you draw up a new pattern. It’s my go to color combo: Navy, Pink, Purple and Teal.

Bloomtastic Fabric

A lot of my pattern’s are an overall design, so I wanted to try to create something with a repetitive design or repetitive block. That is where the Bloomtastic quilt was born.

It’s made up of a bunch of Flying Geese, Squares, Rectangles and a few half square triangles. My pattern uses the 4 at 1 time Flying Geese method. It’s my favorite method, you can make a lot of Flying Geese so quickly.

Once all the Flying geese and Half square triangles are made, the quilt goes together pretty quickly. I decided quilt my original quilt with straight lines from top to bottom, about 1 inch apart. This is a quick and easy way to quilt, and it give the quilt great texture.

I love how this quilt turned out so much! I decided to gift this one to my sister.

After finding this gorgeous Laural Canyon Floral fabric, I had to make a baby size Bloomtastic quilt.

The top is made with Penned Pal dots by Robert Kaufman for the background fabric and the blooms are made using Kona Cotton in Bright Pink, Bahama Blue, Lagoon and Bubble Gum and Canary yellow.

Happy Flower Garden Quilt Along – Week 10 – Finishing Our Quilts

Welcome to Week 10 of the Happy Flower Garden Quilt Along! This week we will be finishing our quilts!! We will go over Basting, Quilting and Binding our quilts. (Download the Pattern)

Quilt Sandwich:
First you will need to make your Quilt Sandwich. You will need to cut and sew your backing fabric to make it fit under your quilt correctly. Make sure it is at least 3 inches wider than your quilt top on all sides (quilt top size + 6 inches). Trim your selvage edge off after joining your pieces.

Make your quilt sandwich by first laying down your quilt backing, wrong side facing up. Tape down to a hard surface, making fabric taut. Next lay your batting on top. Smooth out with your hands, do not stretch. Then lay your quilt top right side up, smooth out with your hands.

Basting Your Quilt:
Spray baste: My favorite way to baste my quilt is by using Spray Baste! It makes basting so much easier. If you have allergies, this is probably not a good option for you.
Find a place where you can lay out your quilt. Make sure to tape the backing fabric taut to the floor (or large table).

Pin basting: You can use safety pin about 3 to 4 inches apart (about the width of your hand). I like to use the large curved basting pins. This takes a little longer than the spray basting, but is a great option.

Quilting your Quilt:
This step is totally up to you!

With my Small Block Baby size quilt I chose to quilt from top to bottom ‘organic’ straight lights approximately 1 inch apart. I lined my walking foot so the needle was about 1/2 inch from each seam.

Hand Tie your Quilt: Some prefer to tie there quilt.

Machine Quilt using your Walking Foot:
Emily Dennis from Quilty Love has a great tutorial on how to Zig zag quilt your quilt with a Walking foot. Click here I love this method of quilting, it give your quilt great texture.

Free Motion Quilting:
Free motion quilting can give you great texture and if you aren’t great at quilting straight lines, this would be great for you. Suzy Williams from Suzy Quilts has a great Free Motion Quilting Tutorial. Click here.

Binding Your Quilt:

Binding is the fabric strip that goes on the edge of your quilt. It covers all of the unfinished edges and rounds out your quilt.

You will want to make sure to square up your quilt before you attach the binding. Cut off the extra batting around the edges and make sure your sides are straight and corners are squared.

Most quilters will cut 2 /12 inch by width of fabric strips and then sew them together at the ends at a diagonal. Then press the strip in half, so that you are wrapping 2 layers of fabric around all of your edges.

You can machine sew the binding to the front of your quilt and wrap it around to the back and hand stitch it down. Or some prefer sewing the binding to the back of the quilt, wrapping it around to the front and machine stitching it down.

Happy Flower Garden Quilt Along – Week 7 – Corner Tulip Blocks

Welcome to Week 7 of the Happy Flower Garden Quilt Along! This week we will be making 4 Corner Tulip Blocks (for every size). It’s not too late to join in the fun! Download your pattern here!

This Corner Tulip Block is super simple and goes together quickly. Make sure you have trimmed all of your Half Square Triangles to the correct size.

You will want to nest your seams so they interlock. To do this, you will press your seams in alternating directions. Then the strips will fit together like a puzzle.

Happy Flower Garden QAL – Week 4 – Bottom Rectangle Blocks

Welcome to week 4 of the Happy Flower Garden Quilt along! We are getting so close to making some flower blocks! Yay!

This week we will be making our Bottom Rectangle Blocks. Remember all those small square you cut out. Now it’s time to use them. These will give the bottom of our Tulip blocks a more rounded look.

This step will be super quick and easy, giving some extra time for people to catch up if they are a little behind.

Next week we will start making our blocks! Yay! I’m so excited to see everyone’s quilts come together!!
