Whose up for some Plaid’N Perky Fun?!? I love making quilts that can either be scrappy or a few main colors. Because not all quilters want the same thing. Some LOVE the scrappy look and it scares others. You can make it super girly, gender neutral, or masculine depending on the fabrics you pick. Scroll down to see all of my quilters versions!

This quilt can be made using 3 main fabrics and a background fabric, 1 fat quarter per block, or you can dig through your scrap bin and make each block unique! It’s up to you!

The Plaid’N Perky Quilt is made up of 16 inch blocks, my favorite size! It comes with directions for a Baby (9 blocks), Lap (12 blocks), Throw (20 blocks), Double (30 blocks), Queen (42 blocks) and a King size (49 blocks).

Partial Seam

You may notice in the photo below that all the plaid stripes in the block are full pieces, no extra seams. To do this you need to do one partial seam when sew all the units together. Don’t worry, it seams tricky, but it really is pretty easy. Just make sure to read all the directions before starting each step. I love that it doesn’t break up any of your printed pieces in the block.

Scrappy using Fat Quarters or multiple yardage pieces

My first Plaid’N Perky Quilt was made using this gorgeous Flora fabric designed by Marisol Ortega for Figo Fabrics. I originally but just a few of these prints, just because I thought they were gorgeous. When I went looking through my fabric stash for fabrics for this new pattern, I saw them and decided to search for more prints from this line. I wanted to try the Scrappy version of this pattern using Fat Quarters.

I love using Fat Quarter bundles to give the scrappy look, but I know all the fabrics will look nice together, because they are all from the same designer or someone picked them out because they look nicely together.

I quilted this one using 2 inch apart organic straight lines from the top to the bottom of the quilt. I used a Warm and Plush batting and the not super dense quilting will let the quilt puff up some once it’s washed. Since the front of the quilt is so bright and fun, I decided to use Valentine by Kona Cotton for the backing fabric, to keep both sides bright!

3 Main Color Version

Next, I wanted to make a baby size using the 3 Main Color cutting instructions. This version really gives the woven plaid look to the quilt.

I went digging through my stash again to find some more gender neutral fabrics. I tend to make most of my quilts super girly. So I found some fabric I purchase a while back. The prints are from the Wander fabric collection by Joel Dewberry for Free Spirit Fabrics. The Background fabric is Med Gray by Kona Cotton.

This version really give your quilt the woven effect.

I’m really excited to see what version you make!! Check out all my testers versions below!!

SUPER DUPER SCRAPPY

Michelle Graham gave me the idea to have a Super Duper Scrappy Version. She wanted to use up some of her scraps from her bins. I love how it turned out!

Scrappy using Fat Quarters or multiple 1/2 yard cuts

This version is great if you have a lot of Fat Quarters laying around, or if you have larger chunks of fabric.

3 Main Color with a Background

If you want the true plaid/woven look, this version is for you!

Sheri using low volumes for her background and Color A. this gives the quilt a whole different look!

Jennie and Connie both added sashing between their blocks. It gives the quilt a whole different look than the others. The pattern does not come with directions for using sashing.

Stash Fabrics has a Throw size Kit!!!

This summer my oldest Nephew graduated high school. I wanted to make him a special quilt that he can keep and snuggle in forever! A lot of my quilt patterns lean toward the girly side, so I wanted to design something that could be masculine. I had been playing around with the idea of making a quilt with lots of flying geese units and some dead space and this designed popped in my head! It reminds me of a flock of ducks flying south for the winter. So I decided to name this quilt Left the Nest because of the flying geese block, but also because the quilt recipient is now moving on to a new chapter in his life. All that hard work in high school has paid off and now he has graduated with an AA. We are all so proud of him!

This quilt is designed to have 3 background fabrics going from light to dark (right to left) and 5 main fabrics going from dark to light (right to left). But you can also make it using 1 background fabric easily but adding all the background pieces together.

IMG_7278 (3)

When I quilted this one I wanted to add more interest in the empty spaces than just straight lines from the top to the bottom of the quilt. So I mimicked the shapes of the Flying geese block. I love how it turned out!

The quilt is designed so the larger the size quilt you make, the larger the size pieces you will use. Baby, Throw, Twin and Quilt all have the same layout. The King size has a couple added blocks to make the quilt a square shape.

This quilt pattern is great for the adventurous beginner to intermediate quilter.

Week 4 – Frame It QAL – Square in Square unit

Week 4_ Square in Square Unit

Welcome to Week 4 of the Frame It Quilt Along!! This week we will be making all of our Square in Square Blocks (Steps 1-4 on the pattern).

Still need the pattern?
Digital (USA and Canada)
Paper (USA and Canada)
Digital (worldwide)

First you will want to decide which version you will be making:

  • The main pattern
  • Half square triangle method (uses more background fabric)
  • Stitch and flip method (uses more main fabric and background fabric)

I recommend trying the Main pattern instructions with some scrap fabric before deciding on which method you want to use.

Tips for this week:

  • Read ALL instructions
  • Be gentle with the cut triangles
  • Sew slowly
  • Square up the finished Square in Square unit to the specified size. When squaring up the block measure 4 1/4 inch from the center of the block.

JOIN ME for a LIVE Video tomorrow (March 6, 2019) at 10:15 am PST (West Coast USA). I will be going over all 3 methods of making the Square in Square unit. I will also be answering any questions you have! If you can’t join me LIVE, the video will be saved to the Facebook Group, it will be available on Instagram for 24 hours and I will upload it to my YouTube channel.

Week 3 – Frame It QAL – Cutting our Pieces

I bought this beautiful bundle from Southern Fabrics! I was going to go with Kona Cotton in Silver, one of my usual background fabrics. But I thought it would have better contrast and make the prints pop better if I went with Kona Cotton in Iron.

Tips for cutting your pieces:
If you are cutting from yardage, I recommend cutting your largest pieces out first. Then cut the smaller pieces out next. This will insure that you have enough fabric for the whole quilt.
If you are using Fat Quarters, check out the cutting diagram in the pattern.
If you are making the Baby size you will be cutting out less pieces from each fat quarter than you would be if you are making the Throw, Twin, Queen or King size.

And as always, measure twice and cut once!
